While I am very pleased to hear of the excellent response you had from this one
shelter, it is an unfortunate truth that there are others who summarily
surrender any dog over the weight of 25 pounds to laboratories and many, many
more in Michigan and other states who do participate in this reprehensible act.
The problem lies with the state laws even more than with the individual
shelters. The pound seizure law there needs to be repealed
nationwide....period. That would prohibit ANY shelter from giving their dogs
and cats to class B dealers or laboratories...which IMHO is a fate far worse
than death.
There are even companies who breed "Purpose Bred Hounds" for experimentation....
imagine sweet little pups brought into the world specifically for use in a
laboratory because of their easy going nature...deliberately brought into the
world to suffer a life of pain and anguish....I cannot wrap my mind around this
and cannot fathom what type of "human being" would engage in this heinous act.
I have spoken to literally more than 100 ACO's/shelter directors nationally.
There are MANY who are truly dedicated to the animals in their care and will go
that extra mile to help an animal get to safety. They should be applauded for
their efforts in what is a particularly difficult job given the level of
finances usually allocated to the local shelter. There have also been the odd
ACO who informed me that they do in fact sell their animals to labs in order to
raise funds. What a tragedy for the unfortunate GSD who may land there....

Actually, I got a call from a shelter in Mich. several months ago. A dog I had
purchased from Canada 9 years ago, and whom I had sold 7 years ago, turned up in
one of thier shelters. He was microchipped which is how they found me. They
could not have been nicer to me. They held the dog until I could make
arrangements to get out there for him, then arranged for one of thier volunteers
to meet us in Flint instead at the upper end of the state. I was concerned about
brucillous (sp?) since I had no idea how he even ended up in Mich. or where he
had been. They did the bloodwork for me at the reduced cost the vet. hospital
did it for them. They worked with us every step of the way so we could get him
back here in Pa. He was in pretty bad shape when someone dropped him off at the
shelter and they were so concerned about him they sent a whole 40 lb. of dog
food along because he was doing so well on it. The dog is 9 years old and while
he looks his age and then some he has come around and will live the rest of his
years here with us.
