[ SHOWGSD-L ] Play dates

Do any of you have play dates for your dogs?  This is a new thing for me.  Not 
the concept, but actually having play dates.  I don't normally allow my dogs to 
play with dogs outside my pack.  First, cuz I am overprotective and also 
because I want them focused at shows and trials and not distracted, wanting to 
play with their buddies.  I am sort of rethinking this.  My Papillon has had 
several play dates (at my house) in the last couple months.  He gets so 
excited.  The 3 dogs are all from one litter and he's known since they were 4 
mos old.  They have a great time.  However, Gallant doesn't understand play 
dates.  After they go home, he looks for them and whines for hours.  For the 
next couple days, he looks for them every morning.  OTOH, when we are at shows 
together, the dogs work well together and compliment each other.  

I know play with the GSD's isn't as much fun.  They are careful with him and 
won't chase him or engage him in the same way as his Pap friends.  I see the 
benefits of play dates.  It is fun to see him so happy and in his element with 
his breed.  

I believe in socializing dogs but in a controlled environment.  My GSD's are 
exposed to dog shows, parks, other breeds and many people.  Play dates, not 
yet.  My pack has dwindled and I am thinking of setting up some play dates for 
Brandy.  She's very social and accepting of other dogs.  She really doesn't 
have anyone to play with anymore.          

Anyone with experience in this?  Are adult GSD's good candidates for play dates?
