I used to have to give Ben Pepto-Bismol for his tummy woes. He was sneaky.
I'd load up the syringe and shoot it straight down the back of his throat.
After a while, he learned how to fake a swallow. The first time he did this,
I let go of his head and began to praise him, then he BURPED UP all of the
Pepto that he had held in the back of his throat-all over himself, me and
the kitchen. I was still finding (and cleaning up) little pink spots a week
later.
I've never had a dog that wouldn't take a pill-and I've had some dogs with
serious medical issues. They come to me in the ktichen and sit, and I just
open their mouths and pop the pills down. Even Max, our newbie-he sits for
his pills, just like the rest.

Jackie could never get pills down Eagle, though-he sure had her number. He
wouldn't open his mouth for her, and she could never master the "gently
pinch the lip against the teeth" trick to make him open up. I just put my
hand on the top of their muzzles, do the lip pinch and say "open"-after a
few times, they get it and open up on their own.

About poop-eating and raw-mine never ate poop on raw either-just that one
isolated incident when Max was settling in. Now that he has settled in and
the dog pecking order has been established (I'm the alpha-none of them even
try to compete with me) all is calm in the household. Max has settled in
perfectly and has learned both by example and practice. He sits withthe
others for his meals, and to let people in and out of the house, and is
learning to walk beside me without pulling. Soon I'll be able to take both
shepherds out together. Rhea has also benefitted from Max's calm demeanor.
She is actually approaching and calmly greeting visitors and is slowly
losing her fear of people-hooray!

I just open their mouths and very quickly pop the pill in
and back, close their mouths and let them swallow. And
THEN they get a treat for being such good dogs. Or not.

I never could understand people who can't figure out how
to properly pill a dog. It's not like it's rocket science
or anything. And for any "yeah...butts" amongst us, I once
had an English setter bitch who was the hardest dog in the
world to pill. I swear that she could store pills in some
pocket in the back of her throat or something and then go
"aaaaaaag" and spit them back out quite some time later.=20
If I could do her successfully, anything's possible!! ;)
