A phone call from an unknown number - (partial conversation)
C: "Hi I am calling about your puppies. I am looking for a reputable
breeder and want a healthy pup with a great temperament. I know the
backyard breeders are not real good here."
Me: "Yes we have puppies, we are going to wait to see if the two girls
are show pups. We think there are two who could be shown and two are
definitely show quality, but if we can find them good homes we will let
the two girls go."
C: "I just came from a lady who has a 5 month old who she decided is a
pet and she wants an exorbitant amount of money. You think for such an
old pup she would just want to give her away."
Me: "What was she asking?"
C: "She said she normally asks $800, but would let this girl go for $600
to a great home with a check and references."
Me: "That sounds like a great deal coming from that breeder. The health
and temperament on those dogs is incredible."
C: "Well if she had show or breeding potential and I cared to do that -
that would be one thing, but I just want a backyard dog for my kids for
Christmas. Why is it that the show people are raising the price of
their dogs? I saw a couple in the paper from backyard breeders for $500
to $800. The backyard breeders are raising their prices to match the
show people who are FIXING the prices."
Me: "Because we give a damn about the breed and work our a&*es off to do
the best we can for health, temperament, and structure. It takes years
of studying and breeding and learning from other people in the breed.
Then you pray, because genetics doesn't always work the way you hoped.
We spend money on stud fees, OFA's, vet bills, care for the dog, time
waiting to see if the pup is showable, etc. We don't go to the
neighbors dog because he is 'pretty' say thank you and never look at the
dog again in the backyard till the pups arrive. If you want a $250 pup
find another breed! Or good luck with the Backyard Breeders."
