[ SHOWGSD-L ] Pet Food Recalls

There have been way too many recalls of pet food lately and all of us should be
vigilant in regards to the safety of what we are feeding our precious
companions. Heck! We should be hyper-vigilant re. what we are feeding
ourselves and our families!
In this depressed economy, manufacturers/providers of food stuffs are trying to
maximize profits in any way they can. To do this, many are becoming lax in
their quality control practices (often due lack of manpower), accepting the
cheapest bids without regards to the safety and/or quality of the goods being
offered, buying from unproved/unreliable sources (i.e. in China/Mexico),
"cutting corners" where/when they can, etc. If these "dangerous" practices are
occurring in the production/processing of people food, you know it's worse in
regards to pet food manufacturing.
BTW, Member's Mark/Exceed dog food is manufactured by Doane Pet Care, which is
a division of Mars Petcare. (Doane was purchased by Mars in late 2007 or early
2008.) Also, just this past Summer/Fall, Mars had to recall cat food
manufactured at it's Allentown plant due to Salmonella contamination. The
recall is now being extended to cover all dry pet food produced at the plant
with a "best by" date between August 11, 2009 and October 3, 2009.
