pets that recently opened here in Tucson. This is really good news. Who
knows when this might come handy some day. They also have a web site
which lists blood donors. This "little" town with it's 800.000

My vets (and I have three major ones, one who does my x-rays affiliated w/ a
24 hour emergency center, one for major stuff, also an emergency center and
one that comes to the house for routine rabies & puppy checks) all know that
if there is ever a blood emergency, all they have to do is call. Any healthy
dog over a year and not elderly who is in good health and up to date w/
immunizations & heartworm can be used as a donor. (Dogs can receive the wrong
blood type once in their life; after that they build up antibodies and their
body will reject a second "wrong type" transfusion, so in a true emergency, IF
your dog is not A-, the universal donor in dogs, for a dog who has not had a
transfusion prior, "type" is not a critical issue.)
What brought this about was in PA several years ago there was a shortage and
quite a few tough calls were made. I can't imagine being a vet having to
tell someone they have to let their dog go because they don't have the blood
to
save them. So, anyway, the next time you go to the vets, if you are so
inclined, let them know they can call you in an emergency.
