When I judge a show, I know everyone there. When I went on the board, I
asked Joan Fox if it was any advantage to be on the board with so many
judges? She told me that after sitting as a board member, there was so much
disagreement, she felt she was reluctant to show under the other board
members.
I found that to be true.
You can do nothing about honesty or dishonesty. I don't care one way or
the other who is the owner, breeder, handler, or if the owner is a judge. I
just try to see what animal meets the standard. No one seems to get mad at
me, or at least they don't say so to my face. I have ended up putting up
people I like, and at times some not so much. I know I have told someone never
to bring a certain dog to me. He did, and I ended up giving him points.
Judging does not make you money. It does not gain you fame or anything else
of value. It takes your time, costs you money, and you have to disappoint
a number of people. Why would anyone do it, if not for the love of the
breed and a service to the club?
A man or woman is honest or not. If he is a judge or an exhibitor, it
would make no difference. If someone offered me $10,000 to put up their dog,
I
might have to think about it. If they offered me $1,000,000 I would not
think about it at all. So far, no one has even ever offered to buy me lunch.
Knowing who is showing, hanging with them, drinking with them, or sleeping
with them makes no difference in most judge's decisions. Or, at least that
is what I have found after 40 years at this.
And, so you don't have to ask, no, I have never slept with any exhibitor
except Tedi, and she doesn't show under me.
