It sounds like you have an awesome club.? Much like the Golden Club here in
SoCal.? But, that is NOT the norm.?
I am in no way pointing fingers for not winning.? I have been?learning and
working on getting better dogs.? I have had some moderate success, as I said,
and I learn with each dog.? I am willing to do my time and pay my dues.? No, I
will not look for?a puppy.??Yes, I?WILL take other's advice, if I feel I can
trust them.? Do I know a Great dog, myself.? Maybe not.??But, I know what I
like.? But trusting GSD people?to tell me what is the best dog?as opposed as
what will bring numbers in the ring for a major?? That is a different story.?
But let me throw this out there.? As someone who shows?GSD's and?some people
know personally, I still get ignored and dismissed when I want to talk to a
breeder or handler.? I am a polite person and will not interrupt a conversation
in progress.? I do not try to engage in a conversation when one has a dog in
the ring.??But, when I am waiting?patiently to talk to one of these folks,
after showing, and don't even get?acknowledged that I even exist or they see me
and just walk?away without giving me the time of day.? How would you feel??
If this is how the Breed people?treat people already trying to become part of
the Breed, what does that say for the newbie??
Again, I am talking about perception.? If JQP is faced with?being shut out when
they want to talk to someone about the breed, why would they pursue show
lines?? I can tell you for a fact that the German breeders do not do this.?
They will Talk til they are blue in the face to convince people that their
lines are the best.? And, JQP sees these dogs as what they know of the GSD.?
So, they buy them.
You say?you are tired of the No education issue.? Well, obviously whatever the
show line people are doing is not working.??Entries are declining, people are
bailing out for other breeds and performance events.? Maybe your club and a
couple others are really working with GSD?people in you area.? But how many can
say the same???
I love this breed, no doubt about that.? But, I also know that I will spend my
money elsewhere.? My dogs all do something other than conformation.? I can be
very happy doing performance events with them.? I am not?anyone in the breed so
I don't expect breeders knocking on my door to let me have an awesome dog.? I
didn't get lucky to have my first show GSD be a Star.??But, I have been around
for awhile and anyone who knows me, knows that I want to show and win.??
Just some thoughts and experiences folks.? And, thus the reason I am thinking
switching breeds fopr conformation.? LACK OF SUPPORT!

No. There isn't, and I'm sick to death hearing that there is. Our regional
club invites non-members to general meetings and we go out of our way to
roll the red carpet out for non-members. They are encouraged to come out to
our
functions, bring the family, ask questions, enjoy the day. We have more
non-members than members eat at our post Agility pig roast than members and
the
comment I hear most often from our AB Rally and OB competitors is "you GSD
folks know how to put on a good show and have fun!"
The breed ring is a small fraction of what we do (OB, Rally, Agility, fun
matches w/ not only breed but show & go OB and Rally, CGC, TC), and here
again,
we go out of our WAY to have educational programs that involve all aspects
of owning GSDS. I've taped ears, discussed diet and training 'till I'm blue
in the face as have many of our members, so IF a person shows the slightest
interest, we're VERY welcoming.
Some decide they want to show in confirmation, and that's fine. It's rare
that their first dog is a star because they probably hadn't a clue when they
were buying it, either about GSDs or that they may one day want to show in
breed. THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE. You can take any dog and slap a few performance
titles on it. Not so in the breed ring. You have others that after years and
years still don't have a clue, and again, that's fine, but if they aren't
having SOME success, you wonder. They usually fall into the category of a
person that exhausts everyone looking for advice then they go and do
completely
the opposite of what was suggested.
They'll either stick with it or point fingers and make excuses.
Can it be political? Sometimes. Newsflash; LIFE is "political"; the
workplace, the soccer team, the church group, the neighborhood
association....get
good at politics!
Showing in the breed ring isn't always easy; it isn't SUPPOSED to always be
easy, but it isn't as hard as some folks make it. (Here it is in a nutshell;
if you want more wins in the breed ring, get a better dog. Notice I said DOG
and NOT 8 week old puppy "prospect". If you haven't had luck breeding your
own or if you can't pick a puppy to save your life, buy one. If you don't
know
how to buy one, if you can't recognize a good one, find the best handler you
know and ask for help there too.) AND expect there will be bumps in the road.
But DON'T keep trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear and then when
you don't win, start pointing fingers and blaming everyone around you.
We don't have a breed where three dogs makes a major. If a person needs to
win to feel validated, I suggest they find an "easier" breed.
