Sarah - having shown other breeds myself (Siberian Huskies/Whippets), I'm going to agree with you 95%. Well others might congratulate themselves on how wonderful they are and why it is the newbies fault for quiting the breed, let me just say that if you are showing dogs for immediate gratification, whether it be instant success in the ring or meeting new friends......the GSD is not the breed to be involved in. Longevity in this breed requires a true love for the breed not all the other bonuses that go with showing dogs, because they will be few and far between in the short term. Now once you invest some time and money and have about 10 years in, things might change....you may meet some great people and enjoy some reasonable amount of success, but for the first few years, it's going to be a lonely place. That's why this year I'm dragging a friend that shows a different breed to our National, so I have someone to hang out with, because the Browns can only tolerate me for so long. Cindy - who is not complaining - just stating a fact. Sarah Bishop <bliz1998@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: I bought my first show dog (a GSD) not very long ago. Almost everyone I know who's a dog person - mom, her 2 friends that show corgis and several of my training club people - has said "good luck with that" in a sarcastic manner. Their opinion is I picked a very political breed and as a newbie with limited funds have not much hope of doing well. So far I made it to one match and showed him. It was a small group and of that group two people were willing to talk after and in between and give me advice. One of them I can't remember her name but she had a cute little solid black puppy. The other Barbara I emailed afterwards to thank her for being so nice and making me feel welcome. She emailed back and gave me contact info for the GSDC of Detroit and was an all around nice person. At Cobo my BF and I watched the shepherds show and afterwards tried to talk to some people but no one was very approachable. Contrast that to my last breed, Australian Cattle Dog. My dog wasn't show quality and I wasn't looking for a show dog anytime soon. Same show 2 yrs previous after breed wandered back to benching and tried to talk to people. Over half the people were approachable and actively greeting people walking by. One breeder had his female out and was using her and his male to talk to newbies and point out some of what they should look for in a show dog. This is part of why newbies, like me, get pointed to other breeds by their family and friends. I don't have a whole lot of ideas other than friendliness is so important to beginners. Any day it's easier to talk to the breeder to as you walk by smiles and says hi than the one who looks like even a hello is going to be to much conversation.
