I wish to respond to this post in a positive way. Over two years ago I met a young man wanting to buy a GSD. He did do so. As she grew he started attending our, GSDC of Sacramento Valley, training classes held on Wed nights. We all enjoyed him and his parents very much. He started to show his Deta and before long she was a Champion. By two years of age. Meanwhile a member of our club asked him to show her young male. From Schokrest lines. He did and now this same dog is a Champion. Finished last weekend at the same set of shows Carolyn Martello's Beau finished. The shows he took his majors at were well represented by the top handlers in our area as well as some from back east such as Kent Boyles. This young man, Zac Hudspeth, has just turned 17 years of age. He is a very good handler and he LOVES the breed. Almost no one knows him. I wish him continued success and he plans to attend the National in CO. Some told him he would never finish his own dog. I never told him that. Just the opposite! If you really truly care you will not give up. And win or loose always do your best. I know allot of people think that way and I hate to say so as I know it will bite me in the butt, but I kinda feel that way too. When I first got into the world of conformation my head was full of ideas of bringing home a champion that I showed, in fact a great aunt of mine told her friends some day my niece will be at Westminster LOl. After a while that dream went by the wayside and I had to start figuring handling and boarding fees on top of show fees. The game got interesting then when the handler I initially hired wasn't part of the "German Shepherd network" she primarily showed dobies and wanted to start showing shepherds so she took on my dog. Even though she managed to put points on him it was rough for her as the shepherd judges did not know her, and those judges that did were ones that also judged dobies. She knew she had a good dog and showed him very well but the recognition factor was not there. The point that I'm trying to make is the way things are, it is no wonder new people are not interested in showing shepherds it is very hard to get into the "club". I still find that when I get a chance to attend a show that many new faces are completely ignored by the people who should be mentoring. I try to answer as many questions as I can and if I don't have the answer I find out. I consider myself still a newbie and will for quite allot of time, and as one I have to say unless we the fancy take measures to change the perception on the conformation world it will be a lost sport in the very near future.
