I wasn't born until after Pearl Harbor, but my step father was on the USS
California. They suffered severe damage and were ordered to abandon ship.
My step father jumped overboard with the ships priest thinking that if it
was his time, he might get into heaven on the priests coattails. To hear
him speak of swimming through flaming water and bodies to get to shore was
humbling. He was only 18 years old.
