Great points and I find these posts to be true.
Pacing appears to be a "resting" gait at a slow speed. The are not
thrusting themselves forward at
the rate they do at a good steady ground covering trot.
At a slow walk........most dogs with any movement have to pace. That was the
point of my original
post. At a slow walk....the dogs will generally pace and have to be 'picked
up' over and over by the
handler to stop the pacing..... ( this is what wears them out........NOT the
walk ) ........or 'held up' by the
handler while the handler walks. <G> This is different than the slow easy
TROT on a nice loose leash.
Left to their own at that slow WALK.... they will pace. You see it a lot
while they are herding as they are
slowed down to a walk so as not to push the sheep too hard.

Well, there are only three reasons...two of them usual are conditioning and
conditioning.

It is easier for a 4-legged animal to pace than to trot...the trot shows all,
which is why it is the preferred
gait to judge dogs by.....at least with regard to soundness. Less energy is
expended...sounds goofy,
  but it's true.
Conditioning is also the 2nd reason -- because the dog is not muscled up
and/or trained enough...he'll
pace because it's easier. (I know, I know...it's the same thing said two
different ways)
Finally, if something hurts when the dog trots, he'll pace to spare himself
the pain. So...pacing he won't
limp (or you won't see it) and if you make him trot, he'll limp.......Peggy

I wasn't going to get in on this discussion, but I guess I have to put in my
2cents <G>
YOU guys get sick and tired of me telling about what" used to be" . Way
back when , at a time that I was
spending a lot of time at LongWorth Kennels with Lloyd Brackett and Gin Mc
Coy and Gin coming up to
my house with bitches to breed to the Cuno dog, WE all had a discussion
about Pacing in GSD.
Gin and I argued and talked with Lloyd, just like this List does, And Lloyd
said something I have always remembered . " It takes a GSD that is well
angulated to Pace easily& properly." If the dog is proper in his
angulation,he resorts to pacing as a resting gait ( as all of you have
noted) ,but it is a smooth pace .
Lloyd used to say if he paces ,he's got to be a a good gaiter. As a matter
of fact,Lang Skarda said the
same thing . Now I'l go back to watching the twin baby deer play in my back
yard.

*I have been told by several people that dogs pace as it is a way of
relaxing. Also so they can move at the speed their handler wants.I know
handlers really discourage it. It is an ugly gait, even in horses. Doris E*
