For a dog to qualify as ANY type of service dog, they have to have trained
behaviors in response to the PWD's handicap
Emotional support/PTSD as of 2014 did NOT fall under rules qualifying
a service dog, as they are purely emotional support, not a physical task
doer for the most part.
If a psychiatrist writes the prescription and the dog has a specific
response/task, a PTSD dog can qualify to be a service dog- since many PTSD
dogs do multiple jobs, such as mobility or pick-up; which then brings them
under the ADA umbrella as a recognized task doer.
Many veterans DO bring their dog companions to the VA for socializing &
emotional support for all who come in contact with the dog; and though
unofficial, many area VAs allow that and the dogs are well received by the
veterans.
