Carolyn Lavengood, administrator of the PF-L group on Yahoo, has asked me to
post the following information regarding Perianal Fistula research to be
conducted at Texas A & M. Carolyn and I go back a long way, meeting about
1992
when both our GSDs were battling Perianal Fistulas. Her bitch made it; mine
dog did not. It quickly became a "cause" for us both in trying to help
others who were going through this disease with their dogs.

From the information that Carolyn received this week from Ginny Altman and
has sent on to me to be posted, Dr. Clark at Texas A & M wants a control group
of 30 German Shepherd Dogs who have Perianal Fistulas. The dogs must be at
least EIGHT years of age and cannot have EPI or be closely related to an EPI
dog (i.e. siblings, parents). This eliminates some of our dogs, but they can
be involved in the EPI portion of the research, according to Carolyn.

Carolyn states that those who participate in this study of GSD PF dogs, will
not just start sending in blood samples. She wants to accumulate the list
of 30 people/dogs willing to participate, and then she will contact Dr. Clark
for the necessary paper work to get distributed as well as the appropriate
number for Fed-X, etc. The participants will then visit their vets and get
the
blood samples sent in. She will provide all the necessary information once
she is contacted by those who want to be involved.

Carolyn already has 10 committed to participate in the research. She felt
that with the stipulation of the dogs being at least 8 years of age that the
information needed to be more widespead than the PF-L.

If you can participate or know of someone who might be interested and meets
the guidelines, please contact Carolyn Lavengood at _Kandismom@xxxxxxxx
(mailto:Kandismom@xxxxxxx) and let's see, as she says, if we can get this
ball
rolling. It's been a long time in coming, and we are very excited about this
endeavor.

Carolyn was volunteer coordinator for many years for the silent auction held
each year at National to raise funds for the American GSD Charitable
Foundation.
