Austin, Texas - PETA had hoped to run its new TV ad--which lays the blame
for the deaths of millions of unwanted shelter dogs squarely at the feet of
breeders--in Austin, but all of the city's network affiliates gave the
30-second spot a resounding thumbs down. PETA targeted Austin because it's
the hometown of Uno, the beagle who won Best in Show in this year's
Westminster Kennel Club dog show. A representative of CBS affiliate KEYE-TV
said, "The whole thing about the dead dogs, they don't want to run it." PETA
will now try to air the ad on cable stations that serve the city.

In the ad, right after a family buys their new dog, the breeder pulls a
black body bag from behind his chair, thumps it down on the desk, and
announces, "Here's the dog you just killed." After the family reacts in
horror, he explains, "When you buy a dog from a breeder, you kill a dog at
the shelter." The ad concludes with a sobering statistic: "Four million
unadopted animals are killed in shelters every year. Adopt. Never Buy."
Every time someone buys a dog from a breeder or a pet store, a shelter dog
loses his or her chance of being adopted. And while Uno has been featured in
newspapers and on TV screens across the country, PETA wants more attention
focused on the 8 million dogs and cats taken in by animal shelters every
year--and the nearly 4 million who must be killed for lack of good homes. In
one Austin animal shelter alone, about half of the 22,000 animals taken in
last year had to be euthanized for lack of homes.
"Every time a breeder brings another puppy into the world, it's tantamount
to signing a shelter dog's death warrant," says PETA Vice President Daphna
Nachminovitch. "We encourage everyone who wants to add a loving animal to
their family to visit a local animal shelter and save a life--not take one."
