PETA EMPLOYEES FACE ANIMAL CRUELTY FELONY CHARGES

Two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are in court
today in North Carolina, each facing 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and
eight misdemeanor counts of disposing of dead animals.

Police in Ahoskie, N.C., who conducted a surveillance investigation, arrested
Adria J. Hinkle, 27, who has worked for more than two years as one of PETA's
community animal project employees in North Carolina. Also arrested is
Andrew B. Cook, 24, who joined PETA weeks ago as Hinkle's assistant.

Investigators reported seeing dead dogs being thrown into a grocery store
dumpster, and finding 18 dead dogs in the container and 13 animal carcasses
in a van registered to PETA. Also reportedly found in the van was what one
witness call "a death kit" that included syringes and two drugs that are
only available to licensed veterinarians. Police said dead animals had been
dumped into the same bin for the past four Wednesdays, leading them to set
up the surveillance.

Hinkle and Cook both posted $35,500 bail Wednesday. PETA is investigating
the incident, and has suspended Hinkle but not Cook, who was being trained.

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk was quick on the media spin patrol. She told
the Associated Press that if animals were placed in dumpsters, "we would be
appalled." She defended Hinkle in PETA's hometown paper, The
Virginian-Pilot, saying that "she's the Mother Teresa of animals. She's a
very kind, decent person." She told a reporter for The Suffolk News Herald
that she had "faith that the truth will come out and that this case will be
resolved without harm to two good people. Mr. Cook was simply a ride-along
at the time of the alleged incident."

Newkirk told The Virginian-Pilot that shelter officials knew that some of
the animals, which are not always "cute, cuddly, housebroken or small,"
would need to be put down.

However, among the dead animals found Wednesday were seven puppies and a
female cat and her two "very adoptable" kittens, taken from Ahoskie Animal
Hospital.

"These were just kittens we were trying to find homes for," veterinarian
Patrick Proctor said. "PETA said they would do that, but these cats never
made it out of the county."

According to an analysis by the Center for Consumer Freedom, in 2003, PETA
euthanized over 85% of the animals it took in, finding adoptive homes for
just 14%. By comparison, the Norfolk, VA SPCA found adoptive homes for 73%
of its animals and the Virginia Beach SPCA adopted out 66%. CCF unveiled
its report <http://www.petakillsanimals.com/>in May.
