A few year ago, I had a dog that had won two five point majors futurity
weekends and decided to go to the all breeds to finish him, because we don't
have any specialties in this area for about three months in the summer. I told
the judge that finished him that he had the wins at specialty shows and his
face lit up and he said ,"I went to the judge's seminar at your National last
year and I thought he was what they were talking about.

prizes by what she liked!! Don't know if I was more surprised by her honesty
or stupidity. How can you have a judge that does not know the STANDARD
(this was an allbreed show.
It happens that some judges get the shepherds to judge, because they want
to do the group. You have to judge the breeds in the group, before you can
judge the group. Some judges who have other herding breeds will add the few
remaining breeds for that purpose.
I find that the newer judges try to learn our standard. But, some are
honest enough to say they don't know it, and judge on what they like. It is a
shame, but at our National you will see judges of other breeds learning our
standard and our breed. I have had a number of judges ask to sit with me or
who I recommend that they listen to.
I am not sure listening to me is a good idea, but I can appreciate that at
least they want to learn. Our breed is different, and not an easy standard
to understand.
