[ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: PA traffic laws

While I do appreciate the safety issue, my kids were in kiddy seats until they
were more than big enough, I would rather risk my dog's life than my own. If
my dog dies in an auto accident, he/she died on duty, protecting me.

If my dog kills me, I will die happy anyway, if suprised.

I must agree. I have had several close encounters myself, and so has my
mom. Having a dog able to protect me is why I travel with a dog. I don't
bring one just as eye candy, they have a job. They protect me and my family
before they are show dogs or breeding stock.

Paul adds...

So where were you all when this law was being considered? Why weren't you
there telling the legislators what you just told "Da List"?

Paul, this is a traffic safety law, (anyone involved in a motor vehicle
accident who is found to have a dog loose in a car will be given a citation),
Peggy brought it to the attention of the list, but it has been a law for a very
long time. All of the stories aside about how dogs have saved their owners
from all types of peril on the road, do you really disagree that it's safer for
an animal as well as the occupants of the car that the dog be confined when you
are driving? (Besides, what kind of neighborhoods do you all frequent <G>?)
It's the same idea as giving someone a citation who was eating a McDonalds
value meal and had an accident or a gal putting makeup on and had an accident
EXCEPT a dog of course can become a projectile in an accident. Many states
have motor vehicle laws re hands free cell phones. Are you going to say THAT'S
a bad idea? Guess you haven't seen some of the drivers I have who can't talk
on the phone and see a stop sign at the same time. And, li
 ke I've
said previously, I DO point this out in my puppy packet, because, guess what,
I WANT the dogs confined for their safety and the safety of their owners and
their owners' children. It's pretty darned tough to argue about that, but I
guess some are just always looking for an argument. (Notice the argument isn't
coming from PA residents.) All laws aren't bad laws. If everyone had common
sense, there may not need to be as many laws, but this one, IMO, makes sense.

AND, for all of you folks who like your dogs to ride loose, I hope like heck
you've tuned your airbags off. The latest SUV I bought has air bags all over
(like a curtain, the guy said). With all of the warnings about what one of
those will do to a child who isn't properly restrained, it only makes sense
that the same warnings transfer to a medium or large dog. They'd kill a small
dog.
