About two years ago, I asked breeders on the List which they thought was more important when breeding, phenotype or genotype. Naturally everyone had their different opinions and gave the reasons for them. Fred M. gave me a quick, simple answer, and I liked it. He told me to forget about the pedigree and breed type to type. Well I think he gave me good advice. Having studied the Redbook, I noticed that many of the winning offspring were from outcross breedings. To take this a step further, I watched the 2006' Stud Dog Class from the National again. When the announcer called in each stud dogs progeny, he would say if it was an outcross, or a linebreeding. Most helpful. The majority were outcrosses. Interesting. So besides paying attention to health problems and other structural faults and temperament, I think I will definitely be breeding type to type and as usual to correct my bitches faults. Although I may add, my humble successes in breeding has been due to linebreeding. Go figure! Best wishes, Barbara -- Barbara J.
