According to Bob Penny, who did many temperament test for us and explained hte test to us numerous times, since the "weird stranger" is not actually a threat, the dog should not have to act like a guard dog. The dog needs to be aware and, should he startle, recover quickly. My favorite reaction of all time was the bitch who walked towards the stranger as far as her 8 ft lead would allow, turned around and lifted her leg, peed, kicked the dirt at him, and casually walked back to the handler. The "weird stranger" when well done is at least interesting and something to watch, especially after the preceeding series of exercises. A well balanced dog should not hide behind the handler and certainly recover readily from being startled by someone acting strangely and mildly threatening at a distance. If the Scary Stranger is not really a threat and dogs with ideal temperaments don't react to him because they don't see him as a threat, then why is a dog that does react to him by barking and getting out in front on the lead rewarded for it and a dog that shows some amount of aggression is considered the ideal. If the scary stranger is really just a joke to a very smart dog then isn't the temperament test flawed. Shouldn't the dog that ignores the scary stranger or shows only mild curiousity be awarded the most points? I asked because when I did the temp test with my bitch she perked her ears and looked at him but didn't really move from my side. She received a plus 1. I sometimes think there is a discrepancy between what the test is suppose to tell us about our dogs and what we as breeders or handlers would like to believe about our dogs.
