Since I feel/know our breed is the most wonderful one on this earth, I would say almost perfect. Who wouldn't want EVERY THING the BEST in their dog? I would. Since our breed is so popular, and can do and be almost anything in this world creates even more of a challenge in what people want to make out of them. I think the most important thing first is our dogs' health, intelligence and temperament. Without those three main factors you don't have foundation. And sometimes just those three things are quite a challenge. Now our goal is for numerous additions to making that almost perfect GSD. There are so many things that make the almost perfect GSD that if we even come close we think we've won the lottery. Now, that was easy. Let's make another one just like him! If I can have my dog's live for a very long time without serious, or any health issues or accidents, is the greatest REWARD I could ever ask for. To live by my side night/day, protect me, and my family and be friendly to those I say are okay -- well then, to me that would be better than any triumph in ANY event. But, if I could add winning events with this dog/s too, then, I've got the almost perfect dog! I've then won the lottery! ...It was nice walking down the street today with my GSD and meeting thirteen children at the bus stop that wanted to pet and hug him. Answering their silly questions, and making them smile. Just simple pleasures like that with my dogs is a win in the ring for me. Kathy Sater-Partch I do think we need to be honest with ourselves. We, generally do not want what our standard call for. Having said that, and raising my shields, let me explain what I mean. Our dogs are to be aloof. That means they are not to be friendly to strangers, and to stand firm when approached. That sounds great, but we do tend to enjoy a dog that warms to kids on the street, and will find a stranger interesting. We don't want a dog that sits in the kennel all day, then tears up the ring, or the sheep when let out. We want a house dog, we want a companion, and we enjoy the camaraderie of our dogs. With that in mind, we have the freedom to interpret our standard to allow us to have what we want, and still approach our standard. In some countries the dogs are bred to work, and are kept outside. Many countries would not consider having a dog live in the house with the family. That isn't right or wrong, just not our way. I love a dog firm in temperament, strong in will, willing to work, but also keeping my feet warm on a cold Winter's night. I don't believe that is what Max had in mind, but then again, he never talked to me. Not that there in anything wrong with that.
