The production of a new Illustrated Standard is a huge, time consuming project
bringing with it a great responsibility which will have ramifications on a
Breed for decades. A project of this magnitude once finalized is irreversible
for years . Would we want to take even a slight chance of putting the wrong
image on ANY PART OF OUR GERMAN SHEPHERD out there FOR future and present
judges TO VIEW ?
It is generally agreed that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi new Illustrated Standard
is one of the very best. It took a dedicated group of well respected breeders
and judges to put this together. I was fortunate to mentor under Judy Hart who
was one of the members of the panel that produced the new Pem IS. During one
of the Mentoring sessions the subject of the IS came up and how it came to be.
Judy laughing stated that there was many a long and sometimes passionate
debate over certain aspects being considered for the their new IS. Nothing
was approved unless everyone on the panel was in agreement - it took a while
but anyone that has seen the finished product would have to agree it is credit
to the Breed and a true tool for education.
The panel was not the Board, some of the members of the panel were on the Board
and others were not.
What was the criteria for that all important panel? It boiled down to the most
respected breeders in the country. And what is a respected breeder? It would
be interesting to know how most would identify "the most respected breeders".
In this case it was those individuals who had consistently, over many years,
produced the very best time and time again or a person who had been engaged
with the very best. An example in our breed might have been an Ernie Loeb.
These people also knew and could have given seminars on structure and anatomy.
The preliminary work that has been completed by the current committee is both
worthwhile and constructive. There should be no hesitation, in my opinion, on
the part of the committee or the Board to seek and incorporate a panel of
"experts" to "pull" together the final components of this extrodinarnarily
important project. This was suggested before; perhaps the Board does not
agree.
