Paul opines...

I do pay attention as the dogs enter the ring. If the class is large say 8
or so...I split them into groups. I request a loose lead and have them take
the 1st group around 2 times. Do the same thing with the 2nd group.

The adage that function follows form or form allows function is very true.
Such function is easily seen (if you know it) and such a dog or dogs always
sticks in my minds eye.

I stand about 8' from the line of dogs and have each one come out to me on a
loose lead stopping 5 or 6'. I approach the dog as a friendly stranger
talking and keeping my air light and easy. I don't do a stare down but I do
look into their eyes. As the Poet has said...the eyes are the pathway to the
soul. I touch dog and maybe scratch his head and ears until I'm satisfied
the dog is sound. I do the individual and the down and back. Then I tell the

handler I want to see their dog "on a LOOSE lead at the DOGS best speed. It
is my experience that each dog has its own perfect speed that is dictated by
its structure. On a loose lead, the dog will settle into that gait
automatically. This can be bad for double handlers who don't pay attention
to my requests. I want to see the dog move as his body structure allows in
the ease of motion described...no "requested"...in the Standard. No
charging, no strung up, no scrambling. If I get that...great. If not, I will
give you another chance or 2. I used to be accused of over gaiting so now I
do it this way and not complying is reflected in their placings.

I finish the 1st group and do the 2nd the same way. After all of the
individuals, I take the 1st group around again and the same with the 2nd.
Then I go down the line and pull dogs I want to see more from in the order
they are in line. This isn't my preferenced line up...juz they way they are.
I put them aside and take the remaining dogs around at least once. I let
them rest or excuse those who won't be considered on that day.

Then I will take my remaining dogs around at least 2 times. Then I start to
place them in order of my preference. I may move them more or compete 2 or 3
together but by them I'm pretty sure what I'm going to do. 1...2...3...4.

In Winners I work from Open down with the Open animal given a break. I pull
the ones considered in the exact same way I do in the classes...no
preference yet. Then I compete those dogs and the cream always rises to the
top. I will compete young dogs until they show signs of fatigue. I believe
if you are considering them for the points they must be able to compete with
"every other dog" I am considering. Then I put them in order take them
around and point.

In Breed I bring my Specials in one at a time and take them around 2 times
for the ringside to see and appreciate. (Several years ago I saw Fran Ford
do it this way and I thought it was a great way to showcase dogs that have
achieved that extra mile and became CH's) Then I take them around as a group
and do the individuals. Then my procedure is exactly as it is in the class
or Winners.

That's how I do it...

OK... folks..... this is a great detailed explanation of a judge procedure
while judging the dogs and Paul's description is textbook.

BUT... I think what they are asking the judges is:
"As you follow the process described above - What are you looking for in
each situation? What are you evaluating?"

Personally, I "think" I know.... but it would be great to hear it from the
horse's mouth - or in this case the judge's keyboard <G>
