Exactly right Paula. However the problem remains the same.
Some dogs in general are very dominant and they absolutely do not want another
dog in what
they consider THEIR space.....especially with THEIR owner in that space. If
another dog continues
into their space they will warn and quickly strike to dominate that space. If
there is contact it is
quick and over in a moment as often the initiator will quit immediately once it
has made it's "point"
and establishes rule. This happens in a split second. The smart dogs
allows the initiator that
space as he understands pack mentality and would likely do the same in what he
would consider
HIS space. We don't like it, nor always understand it........but dogs do.
That is a lot different than a dog that just quietly with no warning or no
reason takes another dog
down and continues to fight after one is down. That's either a 'grudge'
fight like some kennels
have because neither will quit......OR......the dog literally wants to kill
another dog for no reason!!
These are killers!
I would personally never live with one like the latter....nor ever expect the
average home to live
with one like that. No pet is worth it......
As far as what Evan said....I think some of it is correct. Coming from a
large family and raising
4 kids and many grandkids around plus nieces, nephews, and all their many
buddies......"normal"
kids are somewhat the same. They can bicker and fight over 'issues' or even
space......and even
strike a blow or two as kids.....but would never knowingly hurt another.
It's those that do want to
inflict real pain that we would all have to worry about.

The subject has somehow evolved, from a rogue dog that has consistently
killed other animals, to
normal pack and/or protective behavior!! I wonder how many people even know
the difference?
Scary! Paula, 289 days and counting

  BINGO ! Well said, Ginger.
Guess it no longer matters because tomorrow is essentially over.
One thing I would like to say about aggression in my "pack", I GET THE
WINNER.....He / She then has to deal with me.
NO DOG IS 100% COMPATIBLE WITH ANOTHER DOG !!!!!

There is a very good book out called Another Chance To Get It Right by
Andrew Vachss.
It talks about children and how they are not born bad, but become so
depending on how
we treat them. That is the central theme of all Vachss novels.

I used to buy these books 20 at a time and give them to my divorce clients
who had kids.

It is not the same with dogs as with children. Some dogs are just born bad,
and we should
be able to admit it. We can change the behavior, but not the central core.
It shows one of
our weaknesses, but something we need to accept.

You probably can find this book on Amazon, used, I think it is out of print.
   The last time I
was in contact with Vachss, he said he was updating it, and I could have
some of his private
collection, but I never took him up on it.

I recommend the book to anyone who is interested in behavior, and genetic
impact, dogs
  or children.
