As if!!!!
Southwest doesn’t accept pets as checked baggage, and last I checked… not even
my little bitch can fit in a 18” x 10” x 9” soft sided crate to fit under the
seat! Over 80% of flights into STL are Southwest flights.
Going cargo on Delta (because they can’t go as excess baggage) -DASH ONLY- LAX
to STL- NO NON-STOP FLIGHTS and a size 700 crate is: (drum roll) $892.03 for
an 80# dog!!! That’s the only way to avoid the TOO SMALL CONVEYOR SYSTEM TO
HANDLE A SIZE 700 CRATE
For a 500 crate: $592.62
American airlines doesn’t allow larger than a crate:
Maximum container dimensions : 36L"x26W”x28H”— that’s a size 400!
United has a trip in from San Franscisco… they are “reasonable” at only $6-700.
ALL PRICES LISTED ARE ONE WAY
I am quite sure that being near a “hub” airport was NOT considered when Purina
was chosen.
With the restrictions on flying animals, short of being near an airport such as
O’hare or Atlanta, or perhaps LAX or one of the NYC area airports, I don’t see
how it could be a factor either.
People coming in for the sieger show with their dogs (and from out of country)
had to fly into O’hare and then drive the 5-6 hours each way. Inconvenient
after an overseas flight I should think.
Just sayin’…

I'd like a poll asking how many people actually fly to the National nowadays
with all the restrictions. If only a small number, why is that even a
consideration when looking for a National site? Seems that it just might open
up a lot of excellent locations if airports were not a consideration. JMHO

Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] October Board Meeting
With all due respect Zoe….
1) California is dog friendly. I can go to a show almost every weekend
of the year in CA. I stay at hotels for almost everyone. I am responsible for
my pets, and courteous to those around me … and I take care of my dogs. Never
been asked to leave and usually get thanked.
2) I find it very hard to believe that no suitable venue could have been
picked on the West Coast. You have three very large states…. All of which
regularly have wonderful LARGE shows, including NATIONALS for other breeds.
3) Shipping is a pain in the butt… we all agree about that… but
apparently its ok for WEST COAST to ship east but not the other way around… I
get to drive 2000 miles to St Louis in 3 weeks with 3 dogs by my little old
self…. Not how I wanted to spend a week of my two week vacation… (at least FB
wont be in the car messing with the radio) .
4) See quote below…. I don’t care where the membership lives… we are
supposed to rotate.. and the burden should not be borne by a portion of the
group all the time…. Numbers are down all over the place…. You know why …
COSTS…. And I truly don’t see why inconveniencing someone in St Louis should
be my concern when it is readily apparent inconvencing all of us out here is
of no concern to them…. If I hadn’t already committed to this national prior
to the demise of Reno 2017 I would not be going… and I doubt I will go next
year… I wont be able to afford it…. So keep on alienating people and our dogs
and us will stay home. There are three all breeds in the same approximate
time frame as our National… guess where my dogs, and my money will go…
“Also try to remember that over 80% of membership is east of the Mississippi
and some need to be
able to get to a National to even come close to not losing our shirts.”
You also have EAST COAST people who are also financially put out…. And lets
talk about the dogs…. I am sure my dogs will tell you three days in a car
sucks…. Just like a day of flight would for them… but because they are GSDS
they will come popping out of the crate…. Ready to work… maybe we can add a
special class at the national for dogs who had to travel for an obscene
amount of time unlike their local counterparts….
5) I know a lot of the board members are dedicated folks… and they are
very approachable… I have heard there are a couple who are incapable of
having a civil conversation and are disruptive… I don’t know why there are so
many closed sessions (having worked in government for a long time I can tell
you nothing good ever came from closed door sessions but hurt feelings and
ongoing frustrations and rumors)…. But things need to change or we will lose
FB and many others… many who have a lot to contribute or have already
contributed a lot… and that is just sad….
Just me .02 which won’t buy you anything…..
