I enjoy having well-behaved dogs but maybe they need to have just a bit less structure. Is that possible? All you trainers out there, tell me what you think. Laura Thomas Laura, I saw this on sheep. When I first went herding I brought my gal with a UD, my current special and two 7 month olds. The 7 month olds were totally uninhibited and worked on instinct. That first day, I could have been on the moon for all they knew. The breed dog had a blast but checked in with me and the gal with the UD looked like she wanted direction and thought maybe the whole thing was one big proofing exercise. By the end of the day the breed dog and the obedience dog forgot all about checking in and instinct and drive took over in a big way. (Poor sheepies!) I think another time or two and you gal won't be checking in as much but there will come a time when you'll be glad the foundation is there:) Although once my "obedience" dog saw how much fun it was to work (more or less) independently, I never did get her back all the way <VBG>. And...I could never give the older dogs to anyone else to work. Enjoy!
