I spent the forth of July helping my sister-in-law's lab whelp. To make a very long story short the labor was difficult and produced with the help of a good vet (no c-section just drugs) 6 live puppies. One is a water puppy but she is hanging on. The problem is that the Mother hates her puppies. She nailed one and he had to get 2 stitches. She will nurse them and likes cleaning them but gets very aggressive if she sees them move in her whelping pool. Needless to say she is only getting supervised visitation now. Has anyone else seen this? Will she get better? I wonder if it is a hormone deficiency, one that caused the problems with pushing and now this aggressiveness, any other ideas? Any help or suggestions would be welcome. Oh this is the bitch's first (and last) litter.
