Actually, that is NOT why docking was done.
The tail of a dog does not interfere with it's work!!
Docking was done to differentiate the aristocracy's dogs from the common
man's dogs in England in the middle ages. People paid a tax on dogs with
docked tails or the dogs would be killed in a most unpleasant manner.
Aristocrats, of course, did not pay a tax. Docking continues today because
we are used to it, and, as Ellen say, can you imagine a poodle with an ugly
whip tail.
For that matter, can you imagine a poodle with a pretty saber tail?

Actually NO not kidding in the least ...can you imagine a poodle with an
ugly whip tail..or a Boston terrier with floppy ears...or a cocker spaniel
with an ugly whip tail, or many of the terriers??? It is hype and
misinformation on the part of the animal rights groups if you buy into
thinking these operations cause any more pain than a SPAY OR NEUTER!!!
think about it. Most ear and tail docking operations are done under general
anesthesia if the animal is old enough to have enough nerves developed to
cause significant pain. Docking is usually done to avoid problems that
interfere with what the breed was originally ment to do...field work most
significantly. If you think spay and neuter is done for the welfare of the
dog, you are very wrong. Spay and neuter is done so humans don't have to
watch and supervise their animals so the don't get pregnant. Such
hypocrisy....which brings me to the PETA trial...what a travesty.
