Yesterday I was running errands and got into a left turn lane, only to discover that the van in front of me not only DIDN'T turn when she had the arrow, but instead jumped out of her car and ran towards what I saw was a very serious accident. It was car vs. SUV, the car lost, and from where I was, it appeared the driver of the car may have been pinned in, her driver's door was crumpled, the windshield shattered and she was trying to climb out the passenger side door. The woman who had gotten out of her van told the driver NOT to move, as she said her neck and head hurt. I saw that the car had a smoky haze inside, and a little was coming out the one inch area where the driver had been able to open her door a little. IF YOU ARE IN ACCIDENT AND YOUR AIRBAGS DEPLOY, THEY EMIT CARBON DIOXIDE. THE DRIVER WAS NOT ABLE TO BREATHE, CAUSING HER PANIC ON TOP OF SHOCK. Since it wasn't safe to let the driver move, I opened the three doors that weren't crushed to clear the car and let oxygen in. Once she could breathe, she calmed down and stayed still until the paramedics arrived. Most people aren't aware that airbags do not contain AIR, the carbon dioxide (or possibly another gas or chemical agent) is to extinguish any fire IN the vehicle by sucking up all the oxygen. I don't know HOW much comes out, but it's definitely enough to cause panic when you've just been in a crash and then can't breathe. It happened to me, which is the only reason I know aaboutit. Hopefully this is information you'll never have to use, but it helps to know it if you are ever in a crash and your airbags go off or witness an accident and see that the driver is struggling and panicked because they can't breathe. It looks and feels like smoke and smells awful, but it's not fire and if you can remain calm and remember that, maybe you won't panic and try to escape the vehicle in the middle of traffic and risk getting run down by another driver, or risk further injury to your body that you may not feel yet due to shock. Airbags don't usually go off if you are struck from behind, so if your airbags DO go off it's generally a front end collision and chances are pretty good that the impact wasn't near the gas tank. Of course all crashes are different and anything can happen, but that's a pretty good rule of thumb.
