Owners yes. Breeders no.
We would never breed a dog with bad hips. Because of that, I can't
remember one puppy we have sold in the past 20 years that had a hip problem.
I am
sure there are some, but I can't think of one.
Of course, as many have told me, my memory is not what it should be. I
also can't remember who told me that either.
We, the shepherd breeders, have done a marvelous job in developing better
hips and elbows in the breed. No one I know breeds to get pups with health
problems. Can we always avoid it, no. But, the intent is always to better
the breed, and because of that, we have made great steps to improve the
world of German shepherds.
We can't be responsible for neighborhood breeders, (see, I didn't say back
yard breeders since we often use our back yard for the litters), but we
sure can continue to educate, and hope for a perfect world in the future.
