Do you know how disheartening it is for "a kid" to have to deal with that
and come to understand the politics and the protocol of "how it is..."

I started off teaching Summer how to handle a dog. I got a lot of help from
Cindy, Debbie, Bob Grady, and others. When she learned how to handle, I
then took some time to teach her how not to get beat. Only then did I try to
show her how to win. These are all different.

I made sure what happened to me when I started, did not happen to her. As
her dogs got ready to win, I did not take them away to give to a big name
handler. I stuck with her. We may have taken a bit longer to finish Kirk
because of this, but it was important to her, and to us.

All during these lessons, I tried to show Summer how much fun it was to
play in the ring with dogs. How nice other handlers and owners were, and how
she would enjoy being in the ring, win or lose. I never stressed winning,
and tried to make her enjoy the shows, in or out of the ring.

I encouraged her to show at a National with a young dog in the classes and
shared with her the excitement to even place. I introduced her to as many
of us as possible and made sure she talked to people like Iliana, Nancy,
Bob Dresher, Donna, Bill Basu, Molly and so many others who encouraged her.

Only now am I starting to emphasis the value of watching what the other
handlers are now doing to beat her, and how to deal with it.

As a result she loves to show, looks forward to the ring, has made friends
with her dogs, and does not judge the quality of the time she has at the
shows against whether or not she wins.

That is how to encourage a Junior. And, this year if the board allows it,
they will all get a medal from the Youth Recognition Fund. And, if you
all get up off your wallet, some money in the shape of a savings bond as well.
