I believe that any really good breeder with common sense, knowledge and wisdom
of a truly good dog and a deep desire to improve and protect the Breed can
breed 'German lines' into our 'American lines' and be very successful with it.
It IS however very difficult for the average person with any kind of busy
life to find and to have access to good German dogs, AND the income to make the
right decisions with the right dogs in an effort to solve whatever problems
they are trying to correct. OH...yeah....AND without bringing in new
problems! <G> Many of us with due diligence have eliminated most problems and
are getting good quality with few or no problems in our breedings. Plus
I think the Breed is just getting better and better with less problems. I
certainly have no desire to "go back" to any beginning, and I love the
wolf...in its own environment. Just not MINE. <G> I do not understand
that logic....nor the logic of going to other breeds to "improve" the BEST
Breed in the dog world. The German dogs have lots to offer...."other"
breeds...or wolves....not so much!! <G>
To those who think breeding to other Breeds, or German lines or even wolves
could improve our German Shepherd dogs.....I have a question. Do you know
WHERE any of the genetic problems we have in ALL dogs come from?? Do you
know the genetic background on the German dog or the 'other' breeds....or the
wolf?? Remember....technically, genetically they all come from the same
source and no matter how talented we think we are....we cannot manufacture
genes. We CAN breed out a genetic problem.....AND we CAN bring it right back
into the line...or bring in NEW genetic issues. The genes are/ were already
there. Our job is to eliminate or use to the best advantage.
To me the key is to try to avoid problems, and to do that, we must discover
them and admit to them to eliminate them. We have to discover problems in our
lines and HOPEFULLY breed them out, or avoid problems as we breed outside our
lines. That seems to be the major issue....."DISCOVERY"!! FIRST we have to
find and know where the problem comes from.... before we can work to eliminate
it.
Going "back"...after all our work just does not make sense. Neither does
going into someone else's problems...or an unknown problem.

There was a breeder in Wisconsin, Dr Lyn Graves ( he passed away a few years
ago) of Trommel GSDs who was very successful at breeding German/European lines.
He had AKC champions and Schutzund titles on the same dogs! His doctorate was
in Zoology! I believe he taught at one of the many universities in Wisconsin! I
learned more about German Shepherds from him than any person I know! His
knowledge and expertise is lost to us now! Lyn was a maverick ( like me)... I

I remember some good friends who were breeders of GSDs here in California.
They decided to breed into the German lines. After a few years she told me you
should breed to a German male, then take your best bitch, and breed her to a
solid American German shepherd, then from that litter select your top bitch and
breed her to a top producing American dog, then from that litter find a show
quality dog to show.
They no longer are in shepherds.

Well, I read, I think I read, some years back that wolf blood would be great
for the breed, dilute the health issues we do have, prevent others from coming
out….my mom wanted someone to do it, but not her. Me either. I won’t deal with
hybrids, but it would be interesting to see how that would work, one generation
of 50/50, and then back to GSD’s 100%, see what you have in 6 generations……
Just a thought.

This came up on my Facebook newsfeed and it raises certain very interesting
questions. Rare breeds aside, I wonder….
There ‘should be’ enough diversity in the German Shepherd breed to not have to
pursue a genetic rescue, but my curiosity having been aroused..
IF it was necessary to bring a (or some) other breeds into the GSD, which
breeds would you think compatible and capable of improving the breed.
Remember, the GSD started from a mix of breeds. Would we go back to them IF we
knew exactly what they were? or maybe… DO we know exactly what they were/
