The best description of a correct shoulder I read in a long long time. Thank you Carolyn and Kathaleen! It was written about sixty years ago with little change since then. Many of our problems today lie in areas not addressed, such as upper arm. When it states that the upper arm joins the shoulder blade at about a right angle, it means that the upper arm must return at the same angle to the ground as the blade. Since it does not state this directly, many do not seem to understand this relationship. We gain some-we lose some, but we must stress problem areas so that we have nothing but gain/positive change. Carolyn Carolyn: I totally agree, most do not understand this. The issue is.. most are not willing to listen to what you or I or others have to say, because what we have to say indicates that their animal has a fault -- and a majoirity of people involved in this industry today look at admitting a fault of their dog is a fault of themselves, and therefore it is unacceptable. I also think that the biggest problem with the description of the standard which is a block in the way of improvement is the word "obliquely", which is often misconstrued and misunderstood. The Shoulder blade being "Well laid back" or "obliquiely set on" is referring to a 45 degree angle from the ground. People refer to the 2 finger rule and high wither -- (a misnomer.. since the wither is not the top of the shoulder blades themselves but the bones of the spine) .. the whole purpose is to create movement that is far reaching in the forehand. When you join an obliquely set shoulder blade with a long upper arm of as close to the same length as the shoulder blade as possible and the conjunction of these two bones is set at a 90 degree angle, you have a right triangle and a superior shoulder. Fully extended -- the animal will reach far grabbing the ground. Assuming it has a matching rearquarter and that rear quarter is able to provide enough forward propulsion transmitted through a strong back to allow a superior forehand to fully open. We are saying the same thing using different words -- but we've seen what is correct and what is not. Both of us are willing to stand by our opinions, even if they differ slightly, and see the other as having merit. This is also an issue with a large group of dog fanciers today. They cannot and often will not see another opinion as relevant. Again, I'm wondering why I'm spending time writing today, but I liked your words and wanted to add to them. ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2012.
