Good for you Zoe,  Every Christmas morning Nadine fixes a hugh breakfast
meal for up to 20 of "our" people  family and friends............Biscuits
and milk gravy. Along with eggs, bacon, and potatos.  ( there were times
that the gravy was made with water and a little bacon fat).  Most of the
time we had our own cow to give us the milk.  OOOOO we older people.
Hehehe.

We always had a dog and a horse to bring our cows in.  We called them
shepards, and quarter horses.  ?????????

BTW Ken.  It was my grandfather's side on my father's side that had the
Irish â??Grady" side.  Mother's side was German/Dutch.  That is where I get my
gentle temperament.

I had an Irish grandmother on one side (Grady)  and a dutch grandmother on
the 
other side (Van Winkle).  Interesting gsd people names!  They, too, cooked
up 
big meals on no money that tasted great!  Sometimes we had rice with milk
and a 
little cinnamon and sugar.  Sometimes we had bread and gravy.  Loved both as
a 
kid!  Sometimes now, I make boiled chicken and brown rice for the dogs. 
They 
love it, and I save a big bowl for myself.  Don't worry, though, I don't eat

kibble...yet!

Our grandmothers must have been neighbors Ken <G>.

During the depression my Irish grandmother would start boiling water for  
potatoes and my Italian grandmother would boil water for pasta.  There  
wasn't always meat with dinner.  It didn't hurt anybody.

(Is it any wonder I  favor carbs...I was doomed from the start!!! It's  
genetic I tell 'ya!)

On the Irish side we had dogs.  English Setters. Some nights they ate  
stale bread moistened w/ the water the potatoes were boiled in, but they
(and  
the children) always had their spoonful of cod liver oil  
(blllleeeaaaaccchhhh...I can't even smell the stuff!)

But the dogs had glorious coats and the children were healthy and grew up  
knowing not to waste.

And just one more observation...and this has nothing to do with dogs; in  
either household there might not be meat with the potatoes or sausage with  
the pasta but there was ALWAYS money for the collection box at church,
always 
something to give to "the poor".  My parents (children really) didn't  
consider themselves "poor" in those days, didn't know enough probably. 
Either 
that or too proud to think it. They were rich in other ways to be  sure.

We might be going back to that.

I can't make a small pot of soup.  I can't tell you the times I've  tried, 
only to reach for a bigger pot half way through.  I could feed an  army on 
not a lot of dollars with soup.  That too, thankfully, is  genetic.
