they have no idea what causes it.  it's spotaneous and excess accumulation of 
calcium inside the foot pad.  does the dog no harm and appears nowhere else 
in the body but, if left untreated, it's as if the dog is walking with a rock 
in his shoe.  you just have to keep debulking the large pads.  the surgeries 
are done with ace and lydocane and, if skater had surgery in the morning, he 
was 
running around in the afternoon.  depending upon the size of the 
calcification, sometimes the incision needs to be sutured, sometimes not.
hope that helps explain a VERY weird condition!
