With many of you heading to this years National.....just a little brag
from someone who used to show at the AM and CAN GSD Nationals. I just
returned from a beautiful trip to Ventura Beach, CA where the Portuguese
Water Dog Club of America held their national this year.

What a fantastic venue at the San Buenaventura State Beach Park where
all the events were held (conformation, futurities, sweepstakes, rally,
obedience, agility, health testing, seminars and the list goes on and
on), with the exception of the water trials, which were held at the
beautiful Lake Castiac (OMG, talk about a beautiful lake!). I have been
to CA before (1999 in San Diego for the GSD Nationals....the year of the
fog) but what a trip this was. The host club did a fabulous job and the
host hotel (The Marriott right across the street) could not have been
more luxurious for a big group of dog people. The weather was fabulous,
I met some great people, I had lots of fun, saw some drop dead gorgeous
dogs and I got a tan to boot. I could not have asked more of any dog show.

Our intersex/dog judge was Ms. Carla Molinari all the way from
Portugal. Ms. Molinari is a much coveted judge to judge our breed,
having been instrumental in resurrecting the breed in Portugal many
years ago. We have two coat varieties in our breed in North America
only, wavies (usually shown in a lions trim) and curlies (usually shown
in a retriever trim). Due to Ms. Molinari being from Portugal (where
curlies are NOT in the standard) many exhibitors chose to put their
curlies in a lions trim to stand a better chance under her. I took my
9 month old curly male (Sandstone's TNTanaki v Acostar aka "Angus") and
kept him in a retriever trim and showed him to her and am very pleased
to say we placed 4th in the 9 - 12 month puppy class. I was thrilled to
say the least. So, that's my brag.

For those of you traveling to Colorado to show your beautiful GSD's,
have a safe and happy trip and good luck to all of you. If you enjoy
your National just half as much as I enjoyed mine...then I will say your
trip was a success.
