The point is that unless you have Xray vision, you really don't know
where the puppies are inside, or whether one is moving into the canal,
or stuck...which is why I don't use it. It only takes one mistake...and
there's a dead bitch (and it isn't a pleasant death) and a bunch of dead
puppies or, if some are already out and doing OK, a bunch of orphans.
I'll tell you, if you once see a bitch die of a ruptured uterus, you
won't be so quick to give a pit shot ever again...
Yes...get a new vet...but not to give you the pit, rather to be
willing to get out of his warm bed, leave the house and meet you at any
hour of the day or night to help you if something happens and you need him.
It isn't necessary to give "clean out shots" anymore, either, if
you've kept track of the afterbirths...and I don't care how expert
anyone is, giving pit is risky..........and giving three or four or more
is a horrible thing to do to a bitch...you could set the poor girl to
trying so hard she's exhausted...and all the time, the puppy may be
lying in such a way that it can't come out naturally anyway...why would
anyone subject a beloved animal to such torture...of course, maybe every
breeder should experience labour pains before being allowed to breed
dogs...they might feel differently then. I think it's heartless and
very uncaring to just keep shooting a bitch full of pit........
I will let a vet give maybe 2...if that doesn't result in puppies,
I'll opt for the section...of course, if you have waited too long then
the bitch will be so exhausted even that could kill her...but I'd do a
section any time rather than risk losing the bitch just because I
couldn't wait for her to get on with it.
Line up a vet who will meet you if you need him...and forget the
pit, unless you are willing to risk losing your bitch and the pups too...
