Stormy, California might be different but the shelters in my state have been in
the news for not checking. One family lost their dog, shelter picked it up
never checked for microchip and adopted it out. The family went to court to get
their
dog back but since the judge decided the shelter had ever right to adopt the
dog out the adoptees
kept the dog.

There is no 100% safe way to protect your dog but how many shelters follow
every adoption to see if
the microchip caused cancer? How many vets are going to admit to a microchip
causing cancer since
just about all of them today implant them? It is up to each individual to chose
the best way to go but
anytime you put a foreign object that can move in a body you are inviting
trouble.

I think that’s backwards, Theresa.  Most shelters in the U.S. are
very conscious now that they get darn bad publicity if they
aren’t very conscientious about scanning.  BTW, a good
donation from a local dog club is a Universal scanner if the
unusual shelter or rehoming organization doesn’t have
one.
I know that most dog owners, especially those with more than
one dog, takes off collars in the house to prevent accidents
and having the dog end up being choked.  The stats on
cancer ending up on the microchip site are inconclusive but
even then, it is microscopically small compared to # of
chipped animals.
