Thank you!? Charm and I are honored to have an Honorary Degree presented to
Charm from you :-)?
In my excitement to brag about Charm, I didn't explain assistance dogs very
well.? Like Guide dogs, assistance dogs help their owners get through daily
life.? I believe they began with hearing dogs that could alert their owners to
fire alarms, doorbells, telephones and other important noises.? The duties have
now expanded into many different areas.? There are dogs used for parapalegics,
seizure alerts?and even cancer detection.? With the return of so many soldiers
from Iraq with life altering injuries, the demand for assistance dogs and
facilitators has increased.? Initially, I would be working with the dogs for
the deaf and then with the dogs for soldiers.?
The process is the same as Guide dogs in that the applicant becomes approved
for a dog and then when an appropriate dog is available, the applicant recieves
training and then the dog.? They work with someone, like me, to learn how to
work together and do follow ups to make sure the team is doing well.?
The dogs are provided by the organization.? The dogs?follow the same basic
beginnings as Guide dogs.? They have puppy raisers who socialize them and keep
them until a certain age.? The pups then go to the training facility where they
are evaluated for the job that best suits them and are then put through formal
training.? Once a dog and person are matched, the dog begins to learn the
specific skills he/she will need for that person.? Then, the dog is shipped to
me, where I pick up the dog and bring him/her to his new person.??
Now, this is where?Charm gets involved.? Prior to the arrival of their new dog,
I will work with the applicant and familiarize him/her with how to deal with
their new friend.? Many have never had a dog before.? So, I will use Charm to
get them comfortable with dogs and learn basic dog care and other basic
skills.??I will then bring their dog to them and get them started.??Many
facilitators use their own dogs for this purpose but it isn't required.? I just
think it would be a great use of Charm's skills and it always helps me to have
a dog with me when I am training someone else :-)
I am so excited about this.? Anyone want to be a reference :-)? I don't have
the job, YET....? Just kidding.?

Hi Laura:
For over 25 years I was the Southern California Representative for Guide Dogs
for the Blind in San Rafael, California. I am sure you know what an
extraordinary breed we have. I could tell many stories about the incredible
actions by our beloved GSD's Dogs that actually led to saving their blind
partner's lives.
The German's have it right because they really understand the incredible
intelligence and versatility of our breed. They require an Obedience Degree on
their dogs before they can be shown in Breed.
Keep up your great work and please keep us informed of your wonderful project.

Ok, you may be wondering how this is GSD related.? Well, today, Charm and I
got recertified for her therapy work.? As some of you may remember, Charm was
the 2004, GSDCA, Hero Dog, Good Will Ambassador for her work at a crisis
response incident.? Charm had to be recertified but I upped the anty as I need
her for my new job.? I'll explain that later.
Anyway, the evaluator is a UCLA professor.? He gave Charm and I a perfect
score and then some.? She got 2 pluses for her past experience.? So, she ended
up with a 4.2 GPA.? How cool is that?? Ok, there is no certificate from UCLA
for
this (Not a bad idea tho) but I am allowed to say she is a UCLA Grad.??
Ok, why I need Charm for my new job.? In a few months I will be retiring
from the LAPD after 24 yrs.? I have applied for and am working to be a
facilitator for disabled folks who qualify for assistance dogs.? My job would
be
to to work with the new people in getting them aquainted with their new dog,
teach them the commands and get the dog and human to work as a team.? I would
also work with puppy raisers in the training but would not have to take pups on
myself, Whew, don't need any more dogs here, even short term. LOL!??
Ok, so they need tapes of training and my dogs and all sorts of stuff to
accept me.? That is in the works.? But, they were highly impressed with?Charm
and when I asked if she could come with me, they said yes as long as she was
currently certified.? Well, her Cert ran out even tho we still meet with our
regulars.? So, Charm is now official, can fly in the cabin with me and be used
as a Demo dog.? Now, the big hurdle.? They don't use GSD's.? That was my main
motivation for bringing Charm.? These folks need to see for themselves how
awesome this breed is in taking care of their humans.??
Wish us both luck in getting the job and in convincing them how wonderful
our breed can be :-)
