Ok DD, that was going to be my first answer......(just kidding).
Fault judging is a cop out. It is when a judge concentrates on first
finding the faults on the dogs, and mentally keeping a checklist that ends up
eliminating from competition dogs with certain faults (real or not) but
allowing
as contenders dog with perhaps fewer faults, but possibly less virtues.
Problem with this is that judge is comparing dogs to each other rather than to
the standard first.
I consider this the easy way out, that way you really don't compare the dogs
to the standard, and it is a disservice to the exhibitors, who can learn
nothing from watching this judging. A big problem with fault judging is that
by
the time the judge gets the dogs to move around, he has already eliminated
from competition (in his mind) all dogs except those with the fewest faults.
This is how sometimes mediocre dogs end up with awards and points, and yes,
even finished. Long time ago I heard this at ringside "you can finish any dog
if you show them long and often enough"......how cynical, how sad.....but is
it true? You be the judge. <G>
Is a dog with a less than perfect ear set but excellent side gait worse than
a dog with a beautiful ear set who cant move out of his own way? The p
hotographers are the only ones who would be concerned about picking one of this
two. To me, all other things equal, the choice is obvious.
