The person that posted the original question never said she crated her dogs
all day and all night...in fact she said that there was someone home with
the dog all day.
Years ago people didn't use crates because only one member of the household
worked, their dogs were kennel dogs or tied on a chain to their dog house
all day. I think the introduction of crates has created a whole new
generation of dog owners who are able to have house dogs without worrying
about whether their house will be destroyed and their dog will be dead from
whatever crap they managed to eat during the day.

dogs that spend "some" of their time in a crate, but all day
and then all night. I have seen a number
of breeders that do this.
As far as being inexperienced Peggy, I have raised and
shown German Shepherds since 1954 and bred the 1965
Grand Victrix and finished several others.
I had a kennel with a building and large exercise areas.
Years ago people did not crate their dogs like they do today, hours
and hours on end. The only time my dogs were crated was at dog shows
and I never had a dog that
