I love crates and my dogs love their crates BUT when I have to be gone for long
periods of time they have a kennel run to hang out in. I am lucky that they all
get along.

it's called peace of mind! my warlock, aka geniusdog, knew how to open
bottles or jars by holding the jar betwen his front paws and using his mouth to
unscrew the lid. one night, andy and i were moving furniture around and the 5
housedogs were trying to help. the kennel dogs were all crated for the night
so
we put the 5 housedogs in the crate room while we finished what we were
doing. this was in the days before the monthly heartworm preventatives and i
had a
dog in for training from south carolina who was on filaribits. the dogs were
in the crate room for less than 10 minutes. when we let them out, it was
obvious that warlock had opened a new jar of filaribits. (yes, the jar was up
on
a high shelf but that never stopped warlock.) there were approximately 30
pills missing. we had no idea who ate what and our CH fish, who was at the
party, was 7 weeks pregnant. it was NOT fun being on the phone with the
manufacturer's vet at 2 am and then staying up all night, getting the dogs to
drink as
much as possible and THEN standing outside, using a flashlight to watch them
pee so we could determine if their urine had gone orange and they were dealing
with temporary liver damage. thankfully, none were affected, including the
unborn puppies. i have never done such a stupid thing again - if i had only
crated them it never would have happened.
