Peggy I was talking about a local Oregon club member. She has been an active
member for 3 years and joined us because there is no active local poodle club.
I bet there are more poodles than shepherds in the area.

If for example the Oregon people had to travel every year east to Kansas or
Chicago how many times do you think we would go? If we can no longer be a part
of the Parent club functions then why be a member of the parent club?? At least
being a little closer every 3rd year gives us hope.

Owning a Poodle or a Terrier (see Montgomery County for that, or see
below) has nothing to do with it. What people are talking about is
where to have a dog show that people can get to. People seem to go to
PCA and it is always in the East, or has been for many years.
Montgomery County is an all terrier show...that's right, Terriers
only. It is the "mecca" for terrier people from all over the world.
It's outdoors. It is famous for being cold and wet. No matter...there
are over 3000 terriers every October, and they come from all over the US
and Canada and Mexico...most of the Terrier breeds have their National
specialty there. Each club has a host hotel. Each club has a banquet.
Most have sweepstakes. No, they don't have herding or even obedience,
at least nothing but conformation on that day....but there are over 3000
dogs there every year and people come no matter what. Being outdoors
in the pouring rain has not deterred anyone from going to Montgomery,
not ever. (Maybe it has something to do with the bar on the
grounds.............) It's been at the same place for many years and
now has to move...but it will move to a site in the same general area.
In the end, the answer is to pick a spot people can get to--with the
dogs. If they want to go, they will go, no matter where it is, unless
they don't like the judge...even then, they can go to spectate. The
advantage to always being in the same place is just that...the
advantages of knowing the territory...planning where you will stay,
where you will eat, etc.
Rooms for the Montgomery weekend are booked each year as people
check out -- that means this October 2005, as people check out, they
will reserve their rooms for October 2006. It isn't so difficult...
Same with PCA.
It has nothing to do with regional clubs, nothing to do with what
breed it is...it has to do with being possible--with being workable.
Not with what Chamber of Commerce treats you the best. Not with how
fancy the dinner is (lots of people don't go anyway, and those who want
to will, anyway.)
