Okay...this is my first posting to this list so I am going to do my best
not to violate the rules...

I am one of the people Terry speaks about that has come back to the
breed because the National was in Oregon and I just could not resist
going...I have been to most of the major specialties on the west coast
north of LA since then...if you love the breed and you fall out because
of life circumstances the best way to rekindle your interest is to
attend a specialty in my own personal experience.

So here is my suggestion if you want to build the club.

1) Pick standing locations for the show. Three of them to represent the
1000 mile drive limit.
2) Set a fixed schedule including the date. Same time, same week, every
year. Make it habit forming and something that can be planned like any
other "vacation" or long lead time business project.
3) Pick indoor locations in Airline Hub cities:=20
-Region 1 West-Pick one from- San Francisco, Las Vegas, or
Salt Lake
-Region 2 Central-" " Chicago, Cincinnati, Denver, or Houston
-Region 3 East-" " Newark, DC, Atlanta, or Orlando
4) Only change from these three locations if business reasons dictate
(e.g. Show attendance cannot sustain the site two years running, United,
American, and Delta all really do go bankrupt and are replaced by
airlines like Southwest that don't want dogs. etc)
5) Advertise in the local media like the Oregon National to draw in
those out there like me who had "forgotten how great it is".

My two cents and I volunteer to help on a committee or whatever is
needed to implement the project.

That is interesting but may explain why one of our most active club
members owns a poodle. She joined because she likes being part of a club
and the local poodle club is all but gone. She doesn't even own a
shepherd but does like the group of people.
=20
So if you use this reasoning it wouldn't make much difference where it
was held east, middle west, just so it was in the same place every year.
=20
How are the regional poodle clubs doing across the USA?
=20
Does anyone know?

The answer to that is "Plenty." As an example...look at the Poodle Club=20
of America (and the Standards fly around in 500 crates, too...unless=20
they are all driving)...for the past dozen or so years it has been in=20
the same place (Maryland) and everyone who wants to know about Poodles=20
knows to go to PCA--it's the same week, in the same place--no problem.=20
The crowd is always huge--judges, wanna be judges, and just plain dog=20
people go to watch. Last year PCA moved from the Equestrian Center to a=20
facility in Salisbury, Maryland-- no major airport there, either, you=20
have to fly to either National (Reagan), Dulles, or Baltimore, and rent=20
a vehicle and drive (well, you had to do it for the Equestrian Center,=20
too)...but they don't have any problem doing that. Maryland, of course,=20
is on the east coast............hotels are nearby but not on top of the=20
site...they sod their arena, and while they don't need quite as large a=20
ring as we do, they need a big one for the Standards, for sure.=20
Maybe somebody needs to talk to the Poodle folks to find out how=20
they manage to put on a very large show in the same place every year=20
with no problems--at least without the discontent expressed on this list

ever since I first joined it........

You park the national in the same location year after year and how many
new people are you going to be introducing to the breed?=20

There is a certain amount of comfort knowing where you are going year
after year so that would be a plus. If there is nothing new to see or do
then all you have to do is decide if you want to show under that years
judges or stay home. It does make it more simple to decide weather to go
or to save your money for something else.

There is no location in the USA that is going to make it cheaper for the
folks to go and compete. If you don't have 5000.00 to 10,000.00 dollars
to blow then you should probably not show. Many go to watch.=20

Keeping this in mind my guess is that there is more profit made for the
show in selling tickets for seating and the dinner than from the
entries. This is just a guess but I doubt that I am very far off. So you
put it in the "CORRECT LOCATION" for 5 years and how many spectators do
you think you are going to have on year 5?=20

To get to this years national it is going to cost me well over 1500.00
in traveling expenses. That is not counting entry fees handling fees
housing or anything else. This is getting me to the herding trial and
then on to the show.=20

The way I feel about the national these days is that it is going to
become a display of Regional dogs. You keep it in one location and that
region's dog will be the ones shown year after year. Do you think that
is going to be good for the breed? Do you think that is fair? Do you
think that is a National show or a Regional show?=20
