The Beaumont site was voted on before I was on the Board so I am not sure why
Herding is
not in the vicinity of the National. The local Club members or the National
Chair can better
address that.
It is a disappointment to me that it is so far away too. Linda Kury and I co
own a male that
was High Scoring in Herding last year at the National. Linda put a lot of
effort in.....and he
would have been very competitive this year for his HSIS.........and we would
have made an
effort to have our young male ( what'is name ) in the Trial as well as
BO.......but we're not
going to even try with that kind of distance between. We just can't do it.
The herding Trial will be going on hours away and we need 3 days of hard
driving just to
get to Beaumont. Maybe in Utah...............<G>
I know it is hard to find a good trainer for GSD with facilities and livestock
for many people
in their areas. But as Herding gains in popularity hopefully it will be
easier. Normally we go
to the National mainly for Conformation......and do the Herding more locally at
a convenient
place and time......especially when it is so far removed from Conformation at
the National.
Someone like Julie Degen that does ALL of it at the National is to be HIGHLY
commended!!!
She is awesome.........and when she expresses an opinion on the subject of
availability for
all the venues at the Nationals......she should be listened to with great
respect.

Carolyn, you are soo right. Once my boy had his Ch. and also his CD I wanted
to try him at herding. We both had a wonderful time while he just started to
find out what it was all about. Boy, did he love it. The one thing that kept
me from following through with it was the availability or lack thereof to
find some sheep or goats for the training. It's almost impossible here or in
the vicinity to get a certified person - with a stock - to teach as well.
It would be great to see these events at the National.
I understand that the herding was originally planned at or around Beaumont
and someone changed it to Dallas, is that correct?

That has come up at the Board meetings once or twice Sally and we are really
trying to avoid that. Too many people love the herding AND the Conformation.
( me )
and ideally and for the sake of the National itself and the Exhibitors in
both ...... it should
all becapsulated together.
I believe Utah is one of the sites where it will be all on one site much like
Perry for that.
Herding will be right there.....Herding is one of the reasons it would be
great to find a
three or four permanent sites............and well worth the effort if it
happens.
ANYONE that is at the National for any reason...... to watch, exhibit, etc.
should take the
time to watch Herding. It is the most beautiful / natural ways to watch
your dog WORK
physically and mentally and watch it's natural decision making. Once you
watch herding
you will never be impressed with JUST a good front or rear.......you will see
the entire
athletic physical body come into play ......the whole dog in action! It is
a real LOSS that
there is no herding near the site this year.
Herding is the very beginning of why we have this Breed and why it's
instincts make it so
versatile for being a family pet, Search and Rescue, protection dog, etc.
Everyone
should watch the GSD Herding. You are missing what the Breed really is if
you never get a
chance. We should NEVER even consider Herding to not be a part of our
National.
It is actually a big reason the Breed and some of the people involved in our
Breed are
remaining active now.
This Breed is aware of where you are all the time, even if you are in the
house and it is
in the yard.......just one of the basic instincts that make it a great
herding dog AND family
pet.
It's awareness of property lines, and what is going on and where you are all
he time
make it a great protector. Try to go to a Herding Trial where there are GSD
some
day....you won'tbe sorry. Maybe it will be at one of the Nationals. <G>
When your dog is a top Show Dog........and a great Herding Dog....there is
no feeling like it.

So how big is the herding trial - would it be feasible to have a separate
national herding trail? That way the whole national site would not be made
as difficult to find. Take some of the best herding sites and rotate them
around
