I believe there needs to be better definition of terms of "herding" and
"mastiff" to give a good answer. Does "herding" related to the dogs of Great
Britain (BC, Collie) - very frequently it does. We think only "herding" dogs
herd. But many we don't think of as "herding" will function as a good farm dog.
Judging by the many different breeds that have been created in a relatively
short time, once people breed to some standard based on their particular wants,
this breed standardization happens rather rapidly. It used to be working
ability, now it is more based on looks - but whatever, the genepool seems quite
accommodating.
Anyone who routinely works the central European dogs and watches their style of
work knows there is probably little relevance to the UK dogs in
working/training style. I find a larger difference in working style between a
GSD-BC than between GSD and Std Schnauzer. Maybe it is that "German" part of
the equation???

There is a very interesting article in the February 2012 issue of National
Geographic Magazine. It looks at the genetic diversity of dog DNA and its
influence on dog shape/size etc. On page 47 they present a chart where the
DNA of 85 dog breeds has been analyzed and clustered into four broad categories
: wolflike; herders; hunters; and mastifflike. Surprisingly, the German
Shepherd is shown to have overwhelmingly mastifflike DNA..almost none of the
other DNA types. If this is true it sure brings into question how the breed
could have been developed from German herding dogs. Interesting..what to
believe, science or history?
