The dog who was excused from the ring at the Nationals is mine.  He has a major
from the puppy class, numerous best puppy awards, and a reserve futurity win.
Prior to this incident he had never had a problem, in or out of the ring.
During my involvement with him he has been shown 6 times; 1st 12-18/Morton
Goldfarb, 1st 12-18 Tracy Wall (German-minded judge), 1st 12-18 Canadian
Nationals 2010, shown happily in US 2010 Fut. finals/Bob Drescher, 2nd 12-18 US
2010 Nationals (behind RWD Dennis the Menace)/Dan Smith, BIM Toledo 7/2011/Roz
Schaeffer, where he was rolling on the ground in the ring for belly rubs. He
likes children and has good temperament, although he is a smart, willful
brat.   No one could be more upset with this situation than we are.  His loose
lead test at the specialty was fine, at some point during his body exam he
jumped straight up in the air and yelped.  The judge thought the handler had
stepped on him.  At that point the dog
 was suspicious and resented th
e judge.  I asked her why she put him up and she said that she did not believe
he had a temperament problem but that he was blaming her for whatever had hurt
him and that she didn't fault him for that.  When he came out of the ring
probably 20 people (possibly more) went over him on a dropped loose lead from
nose to tail with no trouble.  Later in the day another person went over him
and as she rubbed her hand down his back he flinched and pulled away but made
no attempt to bite; obviously we are trying to figure out what is going on with
the dog. Watch the video; it's not pretty but he did not attempt to bite the
judge...and our handler did the right thing in asking to be excused the
following day.  Our biggest mistake was thinking he was fine and putting him
right back in the exact spot where less than a day earlier he thought someone
had hurt him.  We certainly would not have done that if we had any inkling that
it would be an issue; this is not
our first dog show.   At t
his point we are going to have to let him have some positive experiences in
that spot, but for anyone who questions his character....if you see me at a
show, you are welcome to come to the truck and take him for a walk yourself,
and make a decision based on the dog, not hearsay.  Sheree Moses
