<<This seems to make it around Internet lists every summer. I wonder how
factual it is....over the years I have had quite a few dogs learn how to use
the ice maker on the fridge and get themselves a "cube" whenever they wanted...

Even though I figured his temperature was down enough to feed, and gave him
this ice water, I was wrong. His internal temperature was still high. The vet
stated that giving a dog ice to chew or ice water is a big NO, NO! There is no
reason for a dog to have ice/ice water. Normal water at room temperature, or
cooling with cold towels on the inner thigh, is the best way to help cool a
dog. The vet explained it to me like this: If you, as a person, fall into a
frozen lake what happens to your muscles? They cramp. This is the same as a
dog's stomach.>>

I snipped what I thought was the important part from Vicki's email. I'm
wondering if day to day ice water is no big deal, but to a hot/stressed dog
it's a bad thing? I know with the horses we never give them free access to
water until after they are cooled out to prevent colic. And in I've had my own
experience of being very hot and thirsty at a show and chugging a generous
amount of ice water. Did it once I won't do it again as that was a special
sort of pain that day. Now for me and my critters we stick with coolish water
to drink at shows/events. Just seems easier/safer on everyone involved that
way. Part of my don't overprotect, but don't go looking for trouble either
outlook :)
