I agree wholeheartedly with Julie and think this is one of the most common sense posts on the subject of National sites I've seen for a while. ANYONE that flies in from Korea to Maryland and then drives from Maryland with their dog to attend a National in Beaumont, Tx. deserves to be listened to in their opinion on this subject and knows and understands the issues. Someone like Julie ( and many of us ) obviously does not wait till it is in her back yard. Most cannot do what Julie is doing ........but she is 100% correct in her assertion that the sites really need to be along the line of central bisection of this Country. It simply makes it more reasoable and available for those who must drive...and that number increases every year that the airline flights available for dogs decrease ....and yet increase in price for dogs. Get out your rulers......SLC and Springfield come very close, and Colo. is reasonably within central but could be a little better for the East. We don't expect perfection......just reasonable Meantime.......lets all go to Beaumont!!! I believe that I will deserve the prize for coming the furthest to the National....I will be flying from Korea to Maryland (or thereabouts) and then driving to Beaumont with my dog who is currently in MD. After the National, I have to drive back to MD and then fly back to Korea. ANYWHERE that the National would be held is not exactly convenient for me, unless you all want to come to Seoul! ;-) So, we know that some people will attend the national regardless of where it is located. This said, and although I will try to go to the national wherever it is held, I agree with Carolyn that we need to be looking at more centralized locations than Beaumont, TX, to benefit the majority of the membership and so the MOST people will have the opportunity to attend the national each year. This is nothing personal against Beaumont, I've never been there and (God willing) am planning on attending the national there! I just think we need to avoid "extremes" in locations such as coastal locations (where people can only approach from "3 sides"). Even if the national had been held in Dallas (which is where the herding will be), it is easier to get to than a coastal location such as Beaumont or Daytona (which I also attended). If we drew a line across the middle of the U.S. from just north of San Francisco, CA to just south of Washington, DC, the country is bisected. If we could keep the National within several hours of that "line", I believe that it would be easier for more people to attend. The site in CO meets that requirement and although it is still a long way from the East Coast, as a "West Coast site", it is just about 300 miles further from Washington DC than it is from DC to Beaumont, and Beaumont is supposed to be a "Central" site?? The site in OH and also the one in UT both meet the "within a couple of hours of the East to West bisection line". Although Dallas is further from that mid-line, it would still have been closer to that line than Beaumont, but would still be a Texas national, wouldn't be far for the people from the Gulf Coast, AND is the location of one of the best herding sites in the country!!! Instead, herding is going to now be 5 hours from the national show site....the furthest it has EVER been. Also, tracking is 2 hours from Beaumont (also quite the trek). For those of us who do multiple venues with our dogs, this is NOT convenient! Herding & Tracking are on the same day, and although we may be able to make it one day to herding, we won't be able to go back over there after tracking, nor does it make sense to go back up to herding for the 3rd day (tracking is held on the 2nd day of herding). So, my request for show sites is that ALL venues be within 2 hours AND be closer to a central bisection line (ie. not be in a coastal location....NOT because of weather, but because it makes it further to get to for MOST people!).
