That is very true Peggy ......unless someone plans ahead and gets it done...we get calls from bitch owners with her in season and no mycoplasma test. It's too late for the test so we recommend an A.I..........or that they put the bitch on Baytril or Doxycycline for the ten days prior to breeding. ( with proof from their Vet ) Typical treatment for a high count of mycoplasma is simply ten days of either antibiotic. Now that likely might not take care of a raging infection.....but takes the risk away for the stud.....and therefore the risk away from him infecting other bitches afterwards. The problem with some of the other infections is the pure physiology of "the tie"..... As our Repro Vet explained......it literally leaves the stud vulnerable to a deep seated infection of Strep or Staph that can end up in the kidneys and then it becomes very serious for the health of the stud. Of course with chilled semen implants....or A.I., there is no test requirement for the bitch....and now that is where we are running into problems and some of the conversations I am always having with a few bitch owners. They've spent a small fortune.... not to mention their hopes for a certain breeding......failed conception or reabsorption....and want to repeat .....or feel the bitch will "never conceive". MOST OF THE TIME....when they listen and get the bitch tested... the problem is mycoplasma specifically!! Partly I think because everyone still does the Vag. Culture any other infection is detected and quickly treated. Unfortunately the same treatment does not work for mycoplasma. I just hate when the list's server does this.......I tried to say: Funny how things run in cycles........another list I'm on is talking about Mycoplasma, too. Part of the problem is that vets prefer that the smear for the culture be taken while the bitch is in season.......and given the time it takes to grow the culture, by then you'll have missed the breeding date. Given how anxious so many are to get the bitch bred, many won't wait........because it means waiting 6 months or so.......
